Yep – the forces of nature are quite impressive.

The terror of self-casting…May 16, 2009

In my first phone conversation with Fleur after she’d sent me the original script, she asked me for my first impressions on the film. With such sparse dialogue, and with fairly ambitious locations, it was clear this was going to be a very visual film. So the thing I stressed the most was that casting was going to be incredibly important; whoever had the role of Morgan needed to be stunning, ethereal, and overwhelmingly beautiful.

There was a small silence at the other end of the line, and Fleur nervously said “Actually, I was going to play Morgan myself”.

For the next week, until we first met face to face, Chris and I was haunted by visions of a terrible short film we had seen years ago. Fancying herself a bit of an auteur (as well as a bit of a sexpot), this particular writer/director/producer/editor had also cast herself in the main role, despite being totally unsuitable. It was laughable. And a bit wrong. Ok, very wrong.

What on earth would we do if Fleur turned out to be one of those types? What would we say? How do you tell the writer (and financier!) of a project that they’re not hot enough to appear in their own film?

There was a palpable sense of relief when Fleur walked in and we realised that she was perfect. So too was Erin Dewar, whom Fleur had already cast as Lucy, and Chris Saxton, who plays Edward.

Now the final piece of the puzzle was to find our Johnny. And this was more difficult than we’d imagined…
